Workshops

At Neerja Modi School, workshops on assembling and using Foldscope were organized under the guidance of Rafikh Shaikh, Senior Research Coordinator at Centre of Excellence in Teacher Education, Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Mumbai. During the workshops, our science faculty members and students from grade 6th to Grade 12th were trained.

Workshop 1

Students learned how to make their own microscope using paper and origami. It was beyond their imagination how a paper can fold into a microscope and each one of them can have their own personal piece. The students followed as Mr. Rafiq Sheikh explained the steps to make the Foldscope.

Workshop 2

Students learned to use the foldscope that they assembled in the previous workshop. They learned how to see various types of objects, a slight modification is needed (as per the object) in how to make slides and observe. For example, for translucent objects, a light is focused from the top. For wet content slides holes are used, where samples are put in holes and covered with tape.  And with all slides ready, it was time to explore. The students were super excited to observe different samples that they carried – the sepals, onion peels, petals etc. The excitement was many folds when they actually observed stomata on leaves, cells in onion peels.

Workshop 3

The third session was a bio walk around the campus where students collected anything they thought would be interesting and would like to observe them. Back to the lab with their samples, it was time to dive into the world of microorganisms. Some leaves, petals and sepals were collected moving around the campus. Students even observed the stomata from the leaves on trees by using the fevicol that was spread and peeled off from leaf at different time intervals.
